Hello everyone,
I’m Daljit Singh, founder of Basic Web. Today, I want to discuss web literacy—a crucial skill set in our increasingly digital environment. Understanding web technologies goes beyond just browsing the internet; it involves grasping the fundamentals of how the web works, from site design to cybersecurity.
What is Web Literacy?
Web literacy refers to the ability to read, write, and participate effectively on the web. This includes understanding how websites are built, how to navigate them efficiently, and how to create content responsibly and securely.
Why Web Literacy is Essential
- Informed Online Decisions: Knowing how to evaluate the credibility of online sources and recognizing potential threats can help you make better decisions and protect your personal information.
- .Career Benefits: Many professions now require a solid understanding of web technologies. Whether you’re in marketing, education, or any other field, web literacy can enhance your capabilities and career prospects.
- Business Growth: For business owners, web literacy is vital. It helps in managing your online presence, reaching a broader audience, and using digital tools effectively to improve operations and customer engagement.
- Cybersecurity Awareness: With increasing cyber threats, basic knowledge of cybersecurity is a must. Web literacy includes understanding how to protect your data and maintain privacy online.
My Experience with Web Literacy
In the early 2000s, my exploration of web technologies began, and I was immediately captivated by the vast expanse of knowledge and the empowerment it brought. From mastering the fundamentals of HTML and CSS to delving into advanced server-side scripting, each new skill unlocked a world of possibilities.
Over the past 20 years, I’ve evolved from a tech enthusiast, always excited about technology, into a corporate professional specializing in eCommerce. This journey underscored the critical importance of web literacy—not just for tech professionals but for everyone. It inspired me to leave my corporate job, return to my roots in technology, and create Basic Web, a platform to share this knowledge and make web literacy accessible to all.
